Byrd opened up his round with a birdie, which gave him a sudden two-stroke advantage over Robert Garrigus and Steve Stricker. Birdies at the 3rd and 5th holes helped him maintain his two-stroke lead, but at the turn his lead had been cut in half. On the back nine, Byrd found himself in a tie for the lead on three separate occasions and he did have a chance at the par-5 18th to break the tie to avoid a playoff, however his 17-foot birdie-putt fell short. The playoff with Robert Garrigus saw both players par the first playoff hole. It looked like the second playoff hole would also end with both players parring the par-4 1st hole, but Garrigus hit his three-foot par-putt too hard and it bounced off the back of the cup. The victory is the first Hyundai Tournament of Champions title for Byrd and it is his fifth career championship on the PGA Tour.
