IGNACIO GARRIDO, ROUND ONE 62 (-9) – TANJONG COURSE

Q. Not the ideal way to finish, but you must be pleased with an excellent round of golf overall?

A. Yes it was definitely a good round but I just missed my drive a little bit on the last hole and found the fairway bunker which cost me a shot. Actually the 18th is one of the toughest holes out there and I just couldn’t get it up and down from the left hand side of the green. But never mind, as I said, it was a good round and if you take the last hole out of it, I’m taking a good feeling into the next round.

Q. What was good about your play yesterday and today because you had more birdies this morning?

A. I think it was a very solid round. We all know it is not the toughest of courses and it was playing in very good conditions. So there are a lot of birdies chances out there if you play cleverly and I took the chances when they presented themselves. I didn’t get myself into trouble at all apart from the last hole and I holed a couple of good putts so I just made it happen.

Q. Three top 15 finishes in your last three events and a second in Castellon, this is a continuation of that form, isn’t it?

A. Yes, I have been playing well the last part of the season and obviously the good results bring even more confidence. I was comfortable out there today – and yesterday! – and I am just trying not to think about too much what has happened and just keep doing it.

Q. 34th in the Race to Dubai currently, with a good week here you can push on even higher?

A. Well, let’s go day by day and not get too far ahead of ourselves. We are in a very important tournament here and I was very happy to play because I got into the tournament on Sunday so I was happy just to have the chance to compete – I didn’t want to go and play the Dubai World Championship without having played the three weeks previously and it is nice to be up there and we will see what happens over the next couple of days.

Q. Did the spectre of a 59 ever cross your mind out there?

A. It was actually, yes. I was eight under par when I started today and I hit it very close on the 13th, the par three and I thought...mmmm, if I get to nine here then it is only three more shots I need. Unfortunately, I missed the putt but you can’t really calculate these things, you just have to play hole by hole. However, at least I did have a shot at a 59 which I can’t say has happened too often in my career. Okay it was from the fairway bunker on the 18th fairway and had 140 metres to the pin but at least it was a shot at a 59 – you can’t take that away from me. Usually I am on the 13th hole when I am standing over my 59th shot!!
