Five bogeys in 12 holes threatened to throw Rocco Mediate's round into disarray before a spectacular finish gave him a thrilling one-shot victory at the Frys.com Open.
Mediate held a three-shot lead going into the final round but his struggling form saw him drop shot after shot while a queue of contenders lined up to challenge him.
Four players caught the 47-year-old American who looked to be wilting under the pressure of trying to win his first PGA Tour title for eight years.
However, Mediate rallied admirably and managed to arrest his slide and then turn things around in spectacular fashion late on in his final round.
An 18-foot birdie on the 16th green got him back into contention, before he holed his second shot from the fairway on the 17th for an exhilarating eagle two.
His pitching wedge that spun back into the cup from 116 yards was the fourth hole out for an eagle Mediate had made during the tournament - one on each round of the event.
Signing for a two-over round of 73 at the CordeValle Golf Club was enough to give Mediate a 15-under total and a brilliant one-shot victory.
A stunned Mediate said: "It's insane. I was having a tough time today with the weather, it was busting me up, and then I got a little angry.
"On 17 I had Alex mark his ball and when mine went in it was the same reaction, 'Are you kidding me?"'
Fellow Americans Bo Van Pelt and Alex Prugh sat just a shot back on 14-under after shooting rounds of 71 and 69 respectively.
