ASIAN TOUR UNVEILS ORDER OF MERIT MASTERPIECE
Singapore: The Asian Tour has unveiled a new Order of Merit trophy designed by Tour partner Royal Selangor, a leading brand in pewter craftsmanship today.
The Order of Merit trophy incorporates a modern and contemporary design where the motion of a golf swing is instilled as the main essence of the trophy.
It will now be the pride for this year’s Asian Tour Order of Merit champion.
The trophy was helmed by Royal Selangor’s master designer Mat Ali, who has 12 years of experience in designing trophies. He also designed the 2009 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix and 2010 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix winner’s trophy, and was also part of the team who designed the 1999 World Cup of Golf winner’s trophy.
The trophy is made of pewter which is composed of tin with a small portion of copper and antimony to strengthen it. One of the most challenging aspects faced by Mat was to bring out the lighting on the trophy.
“I wanted the trophy to stand out and designed the trophy so that the lighting on the facet will reflect a different lighting depending on the angle of the trophy,” said Mat.
The trophy will also encompass a semi-abstract design, with various elements of golf such as the golf ball dimples included in the trophy.
Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, a three-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, was captivated by the trophy and he is hoping that he can lay his claim on the prestigious trophy for the record fourth time.
“Winning the Order of Merit title is every professional’s dream. I’m definitely looking forward to retaining the title, starting with a good performance this week,” said Thongchai who is competing at this week’s inaugural Handa Singapore Classic at the Orchid Country Club.
“I really like this design and I appreciate the effort and commitment that Royal Selangor has put into making this trophy such an attractive one,” added the Thai star.
Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han also expressed his appreciation to Royal Selangor.
“The new Order of Merit trophy will be a fitting tribute to this season’s number one. I would like to thank Royal Selangor for its contribution and expertise in designing such as piece of masterclass.
“I hope the unveiling of the trophy will be an inspiration to our talented players to fight hard for success and ultimately lift the prestigious Order of Merit title,” said Han.
Royal Selangor and the Asian Tour signed a Tour Partnership an agreement for a two-year partnership.
